Celebrating World Statistics Day: The Role of Indexes in Financial Markets and Investing

IIA World Statistics Day

By the Index Industry Association (IIA)

Every five years, the global community recognizes World Statistics Day, established by the United Nations Statistical Commission in 2010 to highlight the importance of trustworthy data and evidence-based decision-making. This year, the Index Industry Association (IIA) is proud to mark the occasion by offering the public a free Continuing Education (CE) programThe Important Role of Indexes to Financial Markets and Investing.

The 40-minute program provides a clear and practical introduction to the world of financial indexes, featuring sessions on:

  • An Introduction to Financial Indexes
  • Index Methodology
  • How Financial Planners Can Apply a Knowledge of Indexing to Improve Investor Outcomes

Indexes are statistical constructs that play an important role in modern finance. They measure market performance, are linked to investment vehicles such as ETFs, and provide the statistical foundation for countless financial decisions. Through this educational initiative, the IIA aims to make the concepts of how indexes work – as statistical constructs – accessible to everyone. The program explores how indexes serve as statistical constructs that underpin transparency, accountability, and confidence in global markets, helping both professionals and everyday investors understand the data that shapes financial outcomes.

Participants can complete a short assessment at the end of the program to earn an online certification — a fitting way to celebrate World Statistics Day and deepen their understanding of how indexes connect data to real-world financial decision-making.

About the Index Industry Association (IIA)

The Index Industry Association (IIA) represents the world’s leading independent index providers, who collectively administer more than three million indexes across equities, fixed income, commodities, and other asset classes. IIA’s mission is to promote transparency, education, competition, and sound operational practices across the index industry.

Its members are independent administrators — they do not trade the securities that compose their indexes or create investment products — ensuring objectivity and integrity in benchmark design. By making methodologies public and accessible, IIA members help foster trust, accountability, and informed participation in global financial markets.
